What changed with Coinbase Commerce

⚠️ Hosted checkout retired (Dec 2024)

The familiar one-click "Pay with crypto" Coinbase Commerce page is gone. The new flow assumes customers have a Coinbase account and use Onramp — adding ~1-4% in spread on top of the 1% protocol fee.

⚠️ Custodial settlement

Funds land in your Coinbase account first, then you withdraw. That's an extra hop, an extra surface for account freezes, and it makes self-custody merchants uncomfortable.

✓ The StablePay model

Customer pays in their own wallet → tx goes directly to your wallet. We never touch the money. We charge a flat transaction fee that's invoiced separately. You hold 100% of payments from the moment they confirm.

Common questions

Can I keep using my existing Coinbase wallet?

Yes. Use whatever wallet address you control — Coinbase, Coinbase Wallet (self-custody), MetaMask, Phantom, Trust Wallet, Ledger, etc. We just need an address per chain.

Do my customers need a Coinbase account?

No. They use any wallet they already have (Phantom, MetaMask, Trust, Rainbow, Coinbase Wallet, etc.). For customers without a wallet, our checkout walks them through one-time setup.

What's the migration path from Coinbase Commerce?

~10 minutes: sign up at StablePay, paste your wallet addresses for the chains you accept, swap the checkout widget script tag. Your existing customers won't notice anything different at checkout.

How does this compare on fees for a $10k/month business?

Coinbase Commerce ≈ $100 in protocol fees + $100-400 in customer Onramp spreads (paid by customer but kills conversion). StablePay ≈ $200, no spread, customer pays from their own wallet at zero markup.
